“I never thought I’d live in the US, but I fell in love with the country and wanted to stay. I became a huge politics nerd living and working in the centre of the global politics in Washington D.C.”

From Sydney to Washington DC!
Sarah earned an undergraduate degree in political science and an MBA. She then built her career in enterprise technology and telecommunications.
In 2020, she wanted to work for the public sector so she took the exciting step of working at the Australian Embassy on a diplomatic visa. This experience strengthened Sarah's connection with the US, inspiring her to stay longer.
“I never thought I’d live in the US, but I fell in love with the country and wanted to stay. I became a huge politics nerd living and working in the centre of the global politics in Washington D.C.” Sarah shared.
Determined to make it happen she began the challenging but rewarding process of securing a job in the US.
Sarah’s Job Searching Tips:
Develop a Tracking System that Works for You: Stay on top of your job search progress with a system that is organised but also motivates you. Sarah used Microsoft Excel to track applications, follow-ups, and networking leads. This was particularly useful when she was managing multiple opportunities at the same time.
It’s all about Relationships: Sarah reached out to existing connections, who provided advice and new leads. It also challenged her traditional thinking of the types of roles that she would be open to. Her new role was a result of months and years of relationship building and investment, and was more effective than LinkedIn cold outreach.
Invest in Your Resume: Adapting your resume to the US market can make all the difference. Sarah talked to various HR professionals to make sure she had a professional “Americanized” resume to stand out to employers. It also helped her articulate her more effectively her value to potential companies.
We’re honored to have helped Sarah during her US job search!
“I appreciate Amy’s consistent advocacy work in helping Aussies move to the US” she said. “Her webinars and success stories definitely kept me motivated and showed me it was all entirely possible. Even though it was a stressful and uncomfortable period of my life, I’m glad I took the time to be exposed to the Aussie Recruit ecosystem because it challenged who I was and now my life has irrevocably changed because of that.”
Sarah says she will miss her friends, family and Australia's work-life balance as it prepared her big move to the US
