Andy from Perth landed a Senior Reliability Test Engineer role in the San Francisco Bay Area!

At Aussie Recruit we’re excited to share the success of fellow Australians landing their jobs in the US. In this post we dive into Andy’s incredible story.

“The thought of living in Silicon Valley was OF COURSE enticing. When we were accepted into the Berkeley Skydeck accelerator program, I was ready to pack my bags.

- Andy

Andy is an Australian entrepreneur from Perth now living the dream in Silicon Valley.

He graduated from University of Western Australia in 2016 with a double degree in Mechatronics and Indonesian. After graduation Andy started his journey as a startup founder. In 2018 his startup got accepted into Berkeley Skydeck’s accelerator program. “I was ready to pack my bags” Andy recalls.

He was so excited by the possibilities that Silicon Valley offered.

Since then Andy has lived the highs and lows of startup life; from a successful fundraising round, to needing to start over when it didn’t work out.

He is most proud of bringing humm’s electric brain stimulation patch to market - if only for a short while - and the meaningful contribution it made in neurotechnology research. He has worked across exciting and cutting edge fields including space lasers and most recently surgical robotic.

The amount of opportunities in the US still blows him away, from startups to big corporations. Andy couldn’t wait to see what’s next.

During his job search Andy realized that doing a little bit every day was the best approach. Long stretches of searching drained his energy so he stuck to small tasks. He also made sure to take care of himself. Good sleep, eating well and exercising were as important as applying for the jobs themselves..

He interviewed while traveling and across time zones. It wasn’t ideal but it worked! Andy’s experience proved that you don’t need to be in the US to land a job here.

Andy is grateful for the help from Aussie Recruit. He’s tuned into almost all of the E-3 visa sessions run by Amy Meyer and Jonathan Grode. “They have been critical to me navigating the visa landscape. I would encourage every Aussie to tune in the free monthly sessions if they are considering an E3 visa!” shares Andy.

As much as he loves the US Andy misses some things about Australia.

His family and friends are at the top of the list, but also the beaches, cappuccinos, and Chu Bakery at Hyde Park!!

We thank Andy for sharing his experiences with us and are proud to have been part of his journey. We hope his story inspires you to take the leap too!
