- Jacob
From Melbourne to New York: Jacob’s story
Jacob spent 6+ years working in strategy, finance and project management in Australia. But he had a burning desire to make a move overseas, gain new experiences, and work in a bigger, more dynamic market. When his wife landed a role in Queens, New York, Jacob knew it was time.
They packed up everything, flew their dog over, and headed to New York. “I left my job and backed myself to find a role when we arrived” Jacob said.
Staying motivated and managing the stress of job hunting In a new country
Managing the stress that comes with job searching in a foreign country can be hard. “I made sure to block out time to focus on my wellbeing and exploring the city” Jacob shared.
Balancing job hunting with enjoying the city helped him stay positive and clear-headed.
Jacob’s top tips for Aussies looking for work in the US
Jacob shares solid advice for Aussies looking to make the jump to the US:
1. Lean on Your Network:
“Aussies are everywhere and even the loosest connection can be a pathway” Jacob says. Don’t be shy about reaching out. Your network will be your secret weapon.
2. Referrals are Gold:
Jacob stresses the importance of getting referrals. “Put in effort into finding them,” he advises. A good referral can fast-track your application and make you stand out.
3. Do Your Homework for Interviews:
Jacob put in serious prep for his interviews. “I’d spend hours digging into public announcements, news articles, case studies, and more” he says. “What made a big difference was diving into developer portals to get a feel for the back-end tech. It helped me ‘get under the hood’ of what the company was about.” This level of prep gave him a big edge.
4. It’s a Marathon Process - Be Ready:
“The interview process is long,” Jacob warns. His took about 2 months with 7+ rounds of interviews and case studies. Patience and persistence are key. Keep pushing through. Try not to get discouraged.
We’re honored to have helped Jacob with his US job search
Jacob is quick to credit the 1:1 coaching session with Amy from Aussie Recruit as a key enabler of his success.
“Booking a session with Amy was a game-changer,” he says. “She helped get my resume ‘America ready' and gave me great job searching tips. Amy's 1:1 support was invaluable throughout the interview process.”
