At Aussie Recruit we’re always excited to share the success stories of fellow Australians landing jobs in the US. Brad is an adventurer and has shared some of the challenges he’s overcome and his top tips for Australians looking to work in the US.
First, let’s talk a bit about Brad and what sparked his interest in moving to the US.
If there’s one thing to know about Brad, it’s that he loves traveling. As a fellow Aussie interested in working in the US… you might be sharing this feeling with Brad.
Early in Brad’s career he had a unique opportunity to do a 6 month secondment in Hong Kong. His 6 months abroad in Hong Kong changed everything for him.
Brad realized he could have the best of both worlds. “I can live overseas AND experience the things I like about traveling WHILE advancing my career at the same time” shares Brad.
Brad shares 5 tips for fellow Aussies looking to work in the US:
Track your progress:
Brad tracked all of his progress in a Google Sheet so that he could see a visual representation of his progress and stay on top of next steps. This helped Brad to stay motivated and organized.
Your mindset is crucial:
“Let’s call a spade a spade” says Brad... “job hunting sucks. It's very easy to get down on yourself and let self doubt creep in. A big part of your job search is your mindset..” Review your progress and remind yourself that there are lots of things in the recruitment process that are outside of your control.
Interviewing is a 2 way street:
Don’t forget “while these companies are interviewing you, you're also interviewing them” points out Brad. If you get a bad vibe during the hiring process don’t ignore that feeling.
Be prepared:
Before starting your search spend time considering what are the must haves, nice to haves and deal breakers as you start evaluating different companies. This helped Brad focus his time and attention on the right roles and companies.
Get referrals to cut through the noise:
“When you begin applying, avoid applying cold through LinkedIn or through the website. You need to have someone refer you or at least introduce you to the recruitment team to break through the noise.”
We’re happy to share that Brad was a Supercharge Your Search student!
“Supercharge Your Search is a great tool! It helped me find Aussies and it helped me find Americans who studied in Australia which was such a great ice breaker when reaching out cold seeking a referral. Literally every American I reached out to, using their Australian studies as an opener, loved their time in Australia.” shares Brad.
Tapping into your Australian expat network is key to getting referrals and landing your job in the US. Brad learned our Supercharge Your Search method and put it into place right away.
We asked Brad what he will miss most about Australia:
“I haven't lived in Australia for nearly 4 years now and the US feels like home now, but I do miss the Melbourne food & breakfast scene, and of course a good chicken parma!” says Brad
