Issy from the Gold Coast in NYC

“If you are thinking of moving overseas in your twenties (or thirties)..

DO IT because you never get these years back”

- Issy

Let’s talk a bit about Issy and what sparked her interest in the US.

Issy has dreamed of living in NYC since she was in high school. For the last 5 years she has been living and working in Sydney. Surrounded by her family and friends it was a hard decision for her to leave Australia. But she had her heart set on New York!

Fast forward.. having now lived and worked in New York for one year, Issy is so happy she made the move.

“I can’t imagine not meeting my closest friends, who have quickly become my second family. Additionally, the experiences and travel I have already completed have given me an entirely new perspective. This has been the best decision professionally and personally.

“To truly understand the beauty of New York, you have to live amongst the chaos and experience how the city transforms with the changing of the seasons. I love everything from the events, fashion, cultural activities and roaming the city on foot (ladies heels are not your friend here)”.

Issy’s share 2 tips for fellow Aussies wanting to work in the US:

1. Stay focused and persist. Know that good things will come your way.

“Most of the time you don't hear back from companies and not receiving feedback was difficult, especially when you had gone through multiple interviews with the company.

Companies can be very slow with the interview process compared to Australia. Sometimes I was interviewing with a company for over two months.

It’s an extremely grueling process but you have to stay focused and positive. Know that good things will come your way if you’re putting in the work.”

2. Diversify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket!

“Jobs can fall through very quickly in a competitive job market. Utilize all contacts you have.

I reached out to a number of Australians already living in NYC, had many coffee catch-ups and was constantly networking.

Most importantly, treat it like a full-time job and take the weekends off to reset and prepare for another week of applications/interviews/catch-ups.”

We’re honored to have played a part in Issy’s job search journey!

“I recommend Amy's Supercharge Your Search course over and over!

Aussie Recruit helped me Americanize my resume and further understand the American job market.

The resume standard and interview processes are very different in the US and I would not have had the correct information on my resume if it wasn't for this course!”
