At Aussie Recruit we’re always excited to share the successes of fellow Australians in landing their jobs in the US. In this post we dive into Andy’s story, highlighting his top 3 US job-searching tips for fellow Australians.
"Think of the job hunt not as a race to get a job but the act of building a network.” says Andy
Andy’s networking mindset played a big part in his job search success!
Andy's journey wasn't just about finding a job. He invested in expanding his personal network, which lasts for life beyond just landing a job. As Andy succinctly puts it "Think of the job hunt not as a race to get a job, but the act of building a network. Jobs are short-term but networks pay off in unpredictable ways over time through learning and information gathering, mentoring & friendship, future clients or customers, and long-term job opportunities.”
Andy’s top 3 US job-searching tips:
1. Not all positive feedback is equal.
“People are nice and they want to help - particularly Americans - so you will never hear someone tell you that they don’t think you’re right for a job. Learn to tell the difference between an engaged, enthusiastic and specific reaction vs. a more vague, generic, polite affirmation - which is the closest you’ll get to a ‘no’.”
2. Explore lateral moves based on what’s working and what isn’t.
“If your first target role isn’t clicking, you don’t have to drop down a level - you can explore different horizontal moves.”
3. Try to get a grip on what’s happening at the industry level.
“Getting into an industry is a combination of fit and timing. If your timing is right (industry growing), it’s easier to stretch (lower fit) into something adjacent, more difficult, or a more senior role.”
